To understand the faerumi, you must first understand how fumis as a species communicate. Although fumis can learn to understand human spoken and written language, they do not communicate that way themselves, and in fact communicate through scent and vapor. A fumi 'says' words by changing the scent of it's vapor, and another fumi 'hears' those words by smelling it. This form of scent language is difficult to transfer into human written language, so how do fumis record their words/thoughts in the way that we write ours? The answer is the faerumi transformation. These fumis use flat, fleshy appendages all along their body to capture and store the scent words. So in a way, they're the equivalent of books for the fumi species, albeit living ones. 

No fumi is born as a faerumi, they must be transformed into one, but how does this come about? They say that it is a gift given to fumis who prove themselves to be especially benevolent and wise, granted to them to help spread their kindness and wisdom to the rest of fumi-kind. The exact details of how this is accomplished is kept a secret, for there are those who would seek it out for their own pleasure, as it vastly extends the transformed fumi's lifespan. The transformation process itself is slow and painless, with the signature features growing in gradually as the faerumi ages, and may droop with extremely old individuals as they grow heavy with the stories gathered within (this is illustrated above with the little heads). 

Changes that the transformation causes include:
- The formation of the flat, fleshy flaps that allow the storage of aether scents. They can appear in a vast variety of sizes, formations, and shapes (including but not limited to petal, butterfly wing, and cloth shapes) and can be any level of opaque, transparent, or semi-transparent. These appendages can oftentimes be moved around individually, although the range of motion depends on the individual. These flaps are covered in a very fine layer of fuzz, which allows them their scent storage abilities. They feel velvety soft to the touch and are slightly elastic, but do not tear easily. 
- The ears may take on the same qualities as the flesh flaps, and extra sets of ears may also sprout! 
- Antennae-like appendages might form anywhere on the body (or not at all), which are capable of detecting the emotions and intentions of nearby creatures or beings. They always come in either antennae, whisker, or stamen-like shapes but can come in any length or amount. 
- Thorn-like appendages might form anywhere on the body (or not at all), but are purely cosmetic. They can come in any size, formation, shape, and stiffness (meaning they can be hard/ridged, soft/flexible, or anything in-between)
- The growth of fur is a possibility, which helps the fumi store aether scents. It usually grows along the back and tail and can be short or medium in length, but can show up on other parts of the body as well. Gummi fumis who transform into faerumis may develop a poofy "tail" of fur, these do not form on other kinds of faerumi. 

Other fumis have a massive amount of respect for faerumis, and even those unaware of their origins seem to sense an air of importance around them. For not only are they the sages, story tellers, and scholars of fumi-kind, but they also know the tales of a planet the fumis had been taken from so long ago and make it a point to spread the truth to others of their kind, despite how they should not have such memories to share. The stories stored in their petals are so potent that the fumi smelling them can often visualize it as clearly as if they were experiencing it themselves, and this same potency allows them to becoming 'invisible' to humans if need-be. The concentrated aether is too much for the human brain to process so it resolves to disregard the faerumi entirely, as if the creature 'poofed' out of existence and immediately forgotten about. They can allow themselves to be seen by humans, but they don't normally choose to do so, since they oftentimes have a fear of humans in their hearts, and can easily sense their ill-intent with their antennae.
